A few weeks ago, Dan and I went into Costco to shop. He went back into the store while I sat in the car. A man caught my attention. He was pushing a cart while on the run and then, all of a sudden, jumped on the back and coasted. I watched him do this at least three times.

What author Roy Spence discovered when embarking on the journey of The Amazing Faith of Texas is that Texans have a tremendous array of cultures. Spence found that although we all may come from different religions and cultures, we are bound together because we are Texans - native or not - and we always come together when we see a common purpose.

Virginia Sivells called me after last week’s article about Atwood’s came out in the paper. The amount she gave me for the butter in the recipe was incorrect. Instead of ¾ of a cup, the correct amount is 3 sticks of butter. She sent her profuse apologies. Atwood’s Pancakes (Virginia Sivells) 5 cups flour ½ cup sugar 1/3 cup baking powder 4 ½ cups whole milk 4 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla 3 sticks ( 1 ½ cups) salted butter, melted Mix the liquid ingredients.

Let’s start out with something new. I talked recently with Rhonda Boram at A TASTE OF THYME in Horseshoe Bay. As of last week, the restaurant is now open for dinner service from 5 to 9 o’clock on Friday and Saturday evenings. The spotlight is on comfort foods, something we all seem to be craving these days.

Ken Follett’s sequel to Pillars of the Earth was just released and World Without End is every bit as good as its predecessor. World Without End takes place in the same town of Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building the exquisite Gothic cathedral that was at the heart of the Pillars of the Earth.

Art’s Take

High School, Friday, October 17 It’s homecoming for Llano which hosts the Ingram “how much more do we have to suffer” Warriors. Ingram has lost 28 games in a row, dating back to 2005. The Jackets won last year’s match, 68-0. It would have been worse but head coach David Yeager, in a classy move, had his quarterback take a knee at the one-yard line as time expired.

Missouri at Texas, Saturday, October 18 Ah, Texas, fancy meeting you here at Number One in the nation! The Longhorns earned their first first during the regular season since 1984, when they downed last week’s top-ranked team, Oklahoma, 45-35. Jordan Shipley caught 11 passes and returned a kickoff 96 yards for a score—quite an ascent to glory for the former Burnet star who missed his first two years because of injury.
