Letters to the Editor

January 28, 2010

Dear Editor, On Thursday, 1/21/10, my daughter called to tell me in a terrified whisper that she was hiding under a desk at the Texas State Capitol, because there was a shooter in the building. She then told me that she needed to get off of the phone so she could listen for approaching footsteps. With what I thought was amazing steadiness, I dashed to the neighbor’s back door and asked to use her phone so I could keep my line open.

Dear Editor, Buffoon is the nicest word I can come up with to describe Kirk Bohls…while we are at it, let’s add an ‘S” to it and include Riggs and Rosner. Suh is a great player; but deserving of The Heisman…not even close. You wasted 3 votes that might well be the difference in Colt McCoy winning The Heisman and ladies and gentlemen he deserves it and here is why: · It is a yearlong award…not a last game award · He won ...

An Open Letter: To you who took the money from the VFW Poppy container on November 11th (Veteran’s Day), I am sure you can use the money as well as the 20,000 plus disabled veterans in Texas hospitals. So you won’t feel guilty, I have replaced the money you took so the veterans will not be deprived of any services they would have received without the money. I hope the money does some good for you. God Bless. Jay Suter Hors ...

Dear Editor, As reported by Jodi Lehman in last week’s Beacon, the City Council at their October 19 workshop responded quickly to the October 8 “show of hands” by voting unanimously to abandon the Fairways street upgrade assessment plan. But Jodi’s report of the meeting made clear there are a number of issues the Council must deal with before proceeding with any upgrade program requiring owner assessment.

Dear Editor, During early voting and on November 3 the voters of Horseshoe Bay have an opportunity to approve a ¼ % sales tax that will all be dedicated to improve streets and reduce Ad Valorem Property Tax. Two years ago a committee consisting of Jerry Dunn, Bob Lowry and myself recommended that voters approve a sales tax of 1 ½ % for Horseshoe Bay.

Dear Editor, Having attended the October 8th workshop concerning the road upgrade program for The Fairways area proposed by the Mayor; and whereby with a show of hands and an unfriendly petition waiting in wings was rendered effectively dead; I still came away with the sense that a consensus is beginning to form among the citizens concerning this issue. First of all, let us not blame the Mayor or Council for “firing a shot across the bow” of the community.

Dear Editor, We are writing in regard to the proposed street upgrade program for the Fairways neighborhood. We are adamantly opposed to this project for several reasons. In these tough economic times, we don’t think that any residents in HSB are engaging in frivolous spending habits. This project appears to be just that- frivolous spending.

Dear Editor, Jodi Lehman’s excellent article in last week’s Beacon about the proposed street upgrade plan and my participation in it might have given the impression I am opposed to an upgrade of our streets. I am not. Rather I’m concerned about the method being considered to finance it. I strongly believe that funding with city tax revenues, not assessments, is the only the way a street upgrade program is possible and, in my opinion, feasible. Mayor Bob Lambert and the Council have prop ...

Dear Editor, Having found the Beacon in my mailbox yesterday for the second Thursday in a row, I wondered if this was to be a regular thing. Then, when I got inside the house and opened up the paper, I was very pleased to see on the front page that you have indeed expanded your area of distribution to Cottonwood Shores.

Dear Editor, In my 70 plus years as an American I have always considered myself, “very patriotic.” As a young school child during World War II, patriotism was so much a part of our daily lives. We sang patriotic songs each day and a picture of our President always hung in our class room. I have been around long enough to have witnessed many events in America’s life.
