Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, Over the last few weeks I have had the opportunity and joy of watching a department and community come together to support a member of our organization in need. As you are all aware, Capt. Richard Baum’s daughter, Kristi Smith, is awaiting a liver transplant and the family is overwhelmed with financial needs as this develops.

Dear Editor, BEAUTY - It was a beautiful, peaceful and tranquil community when everyone bought their homes. It was so unique to walk thru the winding roads and paths and see little red foxes, roadrunners, possums, raccoons, and deer. (Especially when you had spent your last working years in a large city.) These wild creatures all had a place to hide their young and escape from predators. It once gave the homeowners a sense of pleasure to take a stroll through the commun ...

Dear Editor: As the New Year begins, I am pleased to present – on behalf of the women of the Highland Lakes Service League – our 2011 Annual Report to the residents of the Highland Lakes communities. Specifically, I want to highlight the “line item” that I call our Volunteer Value. During the last eight months of 2011, the Service League’s 120-plus members contributed 6,290-plus volunteer hours for a Volunteer Value of more than $134,000 to various ...

Dear Editor: There seems to be some legislators (i.e. Senator Cornyn) who are upset about the recent Presidential recess appointment. Fine, but let’s look at some past records. This current President has perhaps made many decisions that have upset these politicians but let’s be honest and fair. George W. Bush used this Presidential tool to make five recess appointments of pro-business lawyers to the NLRB Board.

Dear Editor and United States Postal Service, It is very sad to see the United States Congress destroying the United States Postal Service. The USPS was one of the first departments created by Our Founding Fathers. It has served the citizens of the United States for over 200 years offering the most reliable mail service in the World. It provides six day door to door mail service to all residents of the U.S.

Dear Editor, Super Committee – Super Disaster The very idea of a “Super Committee” was an insult to the American people. Who did we vote on at our last national election? Did we not vote for the Senators and Representatives who promised us to deal with the deficit and create jobs? It is so sad to have to admit that we have all been deceived and misled. Those who were supposed to represent us in Washington, D.C., turned out to be recalcit ...

Dear Editor, My family celebrated the wedding of our daughter on October 22, 2011, at the newly remodeled Quail Point facility . I want to share with other Horseshoe Bay property owners the very positive experience we had working with the staff: Tom, Alyce and Judy. In addition, I want everyone to know what a terrific job Sandra Chavez and Felix Ponce from Divine Design did with all the florals for both the wedding and the rehearsal dinner at our home.

Dear Editor, Are We Losing Our Community?? The latest decisions by our leaders should cause us concern. We need to ask ourselves this one question? WHY DID WE CHOOSE HORSESHOE BAY TO LIVE? WASN’T IT BECAUSE WE LIKED THE SCENIC HILLS, ROCKS, TREES AND QUIET LIVING? Well, perhaps we should all pause and look at the slow and subtle changes being made to our lovely surroundings.

Dear Editor, A sincere THANK YOU to HIGHLAND LAKES COMMUNITY for supporting our workday last Sunday at the Helping Center Garden in Marble Falls. The garden has produced 1000 pounds of vegetables since its beginning in April 2011 because of volunteers like you. Starbucks partnering with Highland Lakes Master Gardeners made this event a win-win for our community.

Dear Editor: The public should acknowledge, with thanks to all Pedernales Electric Cooperative directors, the approval in August of a resolution by the PEC board of a commitment to protect the beauty of the hill country night skies. PEC has pledged to work with land owners, businesses, communities and public entities to reduce and modify the use of outdoor lighting that is starting to produce such glare that we are losing the beauty of our night skies here in the hill country.
