Around the Bay

The Horseshoe Bay Maintenance Fund, Inc. filed liens for unpaid maintenance fees against 1,126 lots in Horseshoe Bay in July. The liens affect approximately 11% of the 10,036 lots in the HSB Subdivision, including 605 lots located in Burnet County and 521 lots in Llano County spanning HSB North, Proper and West. Ruby Yarter, President of the Horseshoe Bay Maintenance Fund, said the fund files liens each July for the total amount of unpaid fees for the current and prior years.

The Llano County Hospital Authority board of directors took final steps to pave the way to merge the Llano Memorial Healthcare System with Scott & White Healthcare System on September 1. At its regular monthly meeting on July 26, the board approved a resolution to sell substantially all LMHS assets and liabilities, and assign the long term lease of Llano Memorial Hospital to Scott & White.

Captain Jason Holbrook, a native of Burnet, was killed Thursday when the vehicle in which he was riding struck an improvised explosive device (IED) in Tsagay, Afghanistan. Also killed was Staff Sgt. Kyle R. Warren, 28, a native of Huntington Beach, CA. Both men were assigned to the 1st Battalion at Fort Bragg, NC. Holbrook, 28, was a West Point graduate, where he majored in Environmental Science.

Resort may acquire Fuchs House
Fox Hollow Springs, one of the three major parks owned by the Horseshoe Bay Property Owners Association, had lost some of its luster due to neglect. In July, Horseshoe Bay residents Javier and Gabriela Castro asked the HSB POA to invest in cleaning up Fox Hollow Springs for use by the dozens of children in the neighborhood deep in the heart of HSB South. State Senator Troy Fraser, R-Horseshoe Bay, was named to lead the Senate Committee on Natural Resources yesterday. “I look forward to assuming the responsibilities of the chairmanship and want to thank Lt. The one of a kind event is scheduled for Saturday, September 18 at Quail Point from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Vendors are responsible for their own sales and set-up. Last Wednesday I received an email from my new neighbors, Nancy and Gary Whetstine. It asked simply, “Want to be an Extra in a movie?” Well if you know me, the answer was “Of course!” So I followed the link in the email and found that they were filming a movie in Fredericksburg based on David L.

If you do any driving in Texas, you’re going to have a close encounter with animals. We have plenty of them and barbed wire fences don’t seem to stop all of them. Even the cattle they are supposed to hold get through them on occasion and there is nothing deadlier than a Black Angus cow on a moonless night.

Santa arrived early at the home of Billye Fietz for some seniors in the Highland Lakes area. On Thursday, July 29, Fietz and Carolyn Thornton hosted a Christmas Party for Older Adult Rural Services (OARS), which serves seniors who need additional financial aid to meet life’s basic requirements. Approximately 40 women brought thoughtful, unwrapped gifts to the party.

When Chuck Ely at The Bottle Shop mentioned to me not long ago that there is a bourbon distillery in Hye and that it might make an interesting story, I had no idea of the learning experience I was about to embark on. I’m no expert, but I certainly know a lot more now about bourbon, how it is made and the fascinating role it has played in the history of our country. The first question: Where is Hye?

Obituaries

1961 - 2010
Amy Mayer Johnson, 49, of Midland, Texas passed away peacefully on July 31, 2010 following a long illness. Amy was born June 15, 1961, in San Angelo, to Martha and Ronald Mayer. Amy spent her early childhood on ranches in New Mexico where her father served as ranch foreman before the family moved to Roswell where she attended public school.

1934 - 2010
Christene Enbody of Horseshoe Bay departed this life to be with her Lord & Savior on Saturday, July 24 at Heart Hospital of Austin following a lengthy illness. Christene was born October 2, 1934 at Artesia, New Mexico, to Edith & Lester Myers. She was united in marriage with Frank Enbody on October 23, 1957 at Corpus Christi, Texas.
