Around the Bay

To help property owners conserve water and save some money on their utility bills, the City of Horseshoe Bay is instituting an irrigation audit service to identify possible leaks and measure the amount of water used by homeowners’ automatic lawn sprinkler systems. Jeff Koska, manager of the Community Services Department of the city, said efficient use of residential lawn irrigation systems results in a “win-win situation” for the city and utility customers.

Although preliminary work will begin on the Bay West Boulevard improvement project on July 19, traffic flow should not be impacted until mid to late August when pavement work will begin. Horseshoe Bay City Manager Stan Farmer detailed the seven week work schedule that will be followed by the contractor, Asphalt Paving Company of Austin, Inc.

The Llano County Commissioners Court voted unanimously at their Monday morning meeting to lift the burn ban that had been in effect for the last two weeks. The county has enjoyed intermittent rains since the ban was imposed, and with temperatures expected to stay below average for the foreseeable future, the danger of fire is much lower than it had been at the end of June. The Horseshoe Bay City Council began the process of developing a budget for the city’s 2011 fiscal year with a six hour workshop on July 7. The heads of the city’s Administration, Development Services, Fire, Police and Utility Departments presented forecasts for operating revenue and expenses, and capital needs for the upcoming fiscal year beginning October 1.

Local efforts to obtain a delay in the adoption of new flood plain mapping have gained some impressive support. In a letter to FEMA dated July 7, 2010, U.S. Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn and U.S. Representative Mike Conaway asked FEMA for a “period up to two years” to allow time for “additional studies to be funded and conducted.” The letter explained the reason for the requested delay.

A total of 20 foreclosure notices were filed in Llano County during June. Six of the notices pertained to deeds of trust secured by property in Horseshoe Bay, including one lot in Escondido that was a repeat filing. For the first six months of the year, a total of 212 foreclosure notices were filed in Llano County.

Two Honduran nationals have been arrested for raping a 14 year old girl last week in Horseshoe Bay. The victim’s 23 year old cousin has also been arrested for her role in facilitating the rape. According to police reports, the victim went to see a fireworks display on July 4 with her cousin, Reyna Marie Ramirez.

Most girls have been guilty at least once in their lives of dating a car. Lately, I found a fat little book in the sale bin at Barnes and Noble named Mighty Muscle Cars that caught my eye in an instant. On the cover was a lime green Dodge R/T Super Bee, just like the one owned by my summer of ’70 boyfriend, Bobby Nick Adair. I was always a car nut.

During the past four years, International Club members have seen the stars through the eyes of the telescopes of the McDonald Observatory, have witnessed an archeological dig in pre-historic America, and walked in the shoes of a mountain climber in South America, all without ever leaving Quail Point Lodge. In August the club will begin its 5th year of learning about experiences, countries and cultures around the globe.

Tom Stromgren, local HSB resident, was recently inducted into the College of Emporia’s Athletic Hall of Fame at a reunion in Kansas City. College of Emporia, located in Emporia, Kansas, was founded in 1872 and closed in 1973. Tom lettered 2 years in football and baseball and graduated in 1958.

Letters to the Editor

How often do we as residents of Horseshoe Bay stop and think how fortunate we are to be living in a city that has such a well trained and efficient EMS…..probably not unless we need to call them as I did this morning. I fell and could not get up, needing help, Ken called EMS at 7:00 am…….within 5 minutes they were at our home.
