Following the Posting of the Colors by Boy Scout Troop 284, Horseshoe Bay Property Owners Association President Tom Schmersahl will emcee Saturday’s 4th of July program at Quail Point. Schmersahl served in the Army in Viet Nam and spent 33 years in the telephone industry. Schmersahl and his wife Jackie chaired the July 4th program in a previous year. Jim Jorden will open the ceremonies with a prayer.

Fireworks go hand in hand with celebrating the 4th of July, but in the City of Horseshoe Bay, it is unlawful to possess or discharge fireworks without a permit. Two fireworks permits have been issued this year, and the deadline for filing for additional permits has passed. The city and the Horseshoe Bay Resort have a permit for a public fireworks display Sunday night, July 4.

On July 1, 2010 the police, fire, and EMS responders for the City of Horseshoe Bay convert their dispatch operations from the Llano County Sheriff’s Department to the Marble Falls Police Department to more effectively serve the community. A Packsaddle Mountain hang gliding accident has claimed the life of an Austin man near County Road 309 in Llano County. Llano County Sheriff Deputies, EMS, members of the Kingsland Volunteer Fire Department and other emergency personnel responded to the call on Wednesday, June 23, at approximately 8 pm. John Seward, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene by Llano County Pct.

Celebrate the Independence Day weekend in Fredericksburg on Saturday and Sunday, July 3rd & 4th, with live pari-mutuel horse racing at the Gillespie County Fairgrounds. Sponsored by the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association, the two-day July Fourth Racing Festival kicks off the eight-day 2010 summer racing season at the Fairgrounds. Featured will be thoroughbred and quarter horse racing on Saturday and Sunday on the five-eighths mile oval at the Class III track.

The City of Horseshoe Bay issued one new building permit during May for a new home on Applehead Island, bringing the total number of new residential permits to eight for the first five months of 2010. The city issued 13 permits during the first five months of 2009, 29 permits during the same period in 2008, and 59 permits during 2007. Eric Winter, Development Services Manager, reported that residents continue to improve their properties.

The Horseshoe Bay Sports Club is pleased to present Larry Coker, Head Football Coach of the University of Texas San Antonio, as guest speaker at the monthly breakfast on Wednesday, July 7 at 8 a.m. at the Marriott Hotel. As former coach of the National Champion Miami Hurricanes in 2001, Coker was named the National Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2005.

Allied Waste will be picking up garbage as usual on Monday, July 5. Residents and visitors can also drop off garbage and recyclables at the city’s Reclamation Center, located a tenth of a mile north of Hwy 71 on FM 2831 (the Blue Lake Road), adjacent to the city’s wastewater treatment plant.

While on a trip to New York City last week I was fortunate to discover HSB resident and artist Jeff Leedy and his whimsical paintings at Lincoln Center’s 34th Annual American Crafts Festival. He had driven there from a Chicago show the previous week. He says he enjoys showing his art around the country but doesn’t like leaving HSB and his wife Elaine for long.

CEOs are fired in America every day. Most head coaches in America have been fired. City managers are fired. General McChrystal was just fired. Dan Rather got fired and so did Carly Fiorini. In my career, I have been fired. Media and others are free to speculate. While most employers are bound by rules of confidentiality that protect the employee, one might generally assume that the person getting fired has failed to live up to expectations for one reason or another.

Newly elected directors Chris Perry and Ross Fischer were officially seated June 28 on Pedernales Electric Cooperative’s Board of Directors; all seven directors have now been democratically elected by the membership. The new board, meeting at a special organizational meeting at the Johnson City headquarters, also held officer elections and re-elected Larry Landaker as board president.

Horseshoe Bay Resort is hosting the last chance local qualifier for the ESPN National Golf Challenge on Saturday, July 17 at Slick Rock Golf Course. The format is two person teams, one best ball, with gross and net divisions. If you’re like I am, you rarely, if ever, step on the scales to see what you weigh unless you’re consciously making an effort to lose weight. Watching the needle waver between obese and obscene is not something I want to witness on a daily basis. The same could be said about monitoring my retirement nest egg.

In 1952, my sister Bobbie Nell was 12 years old when she developed flu-like symptoms and was sent home from school. Our country doctor pronounced it to be the flu, but she continued to worsen and 3 days later was taken to Hendrick Hospital in Abilene where my mother and dad watched her strangle to death for lack of an iron lung, which were all occupied.

Half a century ago, young engineer Tom D’Arcy designed a bridge connecting two small cities in Michigan. In June, 2010, D’Arcy was honored as Grand Marshall of the Bridgefest Parade celebrating the bridge’s 50th anniversary. D’Arcy was a young engineer, just 27 years old, and employed by the firm of Hazelet & Erdal when he was tasked with designing the bridge.

This Saturday a lot of folks in Horseshoe Bay will be gathering around Horseshoe Bay Boulevard, Hi Circle North, Red Sail and Quail Point for our annual Fourth of July celebration. With the land parade, boat parade and all the activities planned at Quail Point, the festivities always draw a big crowd.
