Last week, Barry Smitherman, Chair of the Public Utility Commission of Texas, asked the Electric Reliability Council of Texas to “thoroughly re-evaluate the need for the Gillespie to Newton transmission line” that has been proposed to carry wind energy generated in West Texas to population centers along the I35 corridor.

The criminal cases filed against former Pedernales Electric Cooperative General Manager Bennie Fuelberg and the co-op’s former longtime outside attorney, Walter Demond, will not be tried in Johnson City or any other city served by PEC. On Monday, 424th District Court Judge Dan Mills granted the motion for a change of venue filed by the defendants.

The concert hosted by The Church at Horseshoe Bay became a global musical experience Sunday afternoon. Not only with world renowned performers but with the presentation of the works of internationally known composers. The beautiful and talented musicians, all of Asian decent, charmed the audience with their abilities and their repertoire.

Sheriff W. T. Smith and the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office began its lake patrol season Memorial Day weekend. Deputies will be patrolling the Highland Lakes checking watercraft for required equipment to insure occupant safety and observing watercraft for safe operation practices. Sheriff Smith stated, “Our goal is voluntary compliance so that all may enjoy a time of relaxation in a safe environment.

A total of 43 foreclosure notices were filed in Llano County during May, more than half of which were repeat filings. Thirty of the notices pertained to deeds of trust secured by property in Horseshoe Bay. Twenty-three of the 30 notices relating to HSB real estate were repeat filings involving property owned by LBJ Lakefront, Inc., but no action was taken on these notices at the June 1 trustee’s sale.

The third annual Horseshoe Bay Golf on the Rocks Ladies Invitational Tournament, hosted by HSB Resort and HSB WGA, was a spectacular success due to the hard work of the Resort’s management and staff, as well as that of a dedicated WGA tournament committee. A full field of 176 lady golfers converged on HSB from all across the United States on June 1 - 3, to test their competitive skills on Slick Rock and the relentless Ram Rock Golf Course.

Horseshoe Bay residents who have Monday trash collection were surprised on Memorial Day when their garbage was not picked up as usual. So were city officials. For years, the City of HSB has contracted with Allied Waste (BFI) for garbage services. HSB City Manager Stan Farmer explained, “Prior to 2007, the contract called for garbage collection on all Monday holidays.

Garrett Koch, son of Greg and Audra Koch of San Antonio, and grandson of Horseshoe Bay residents Woody and Doodle Bretscher, earned the prestigious award of Eagle Scout. In an effort to cut down on graffiti, Guadalupe Community Center asked Garrett to paint a mural on the wall of its main building.

Can you imagine working for twenty-two years and never being paid a dime? Marble Falls Library Thrift Store Volunteer Margie Schroeter has worked at the Library Thrift Store since 1988. She drives two mornings each week from her ranch in Fairland to the Thrift Store while it is still dark, arriving at the store at 7 a.m.

The GED graduation for Literacy Highland Lakes’ students was held at Hill Country Community Theatre on Thursday, May 27th, at 6:00 p.m. This year was made very special because the graduates proudly wore black caps and gowns, funded by the Benevolence Committee of the Church at Horseshoe Bay. One graduate, Paul Hoaglin, was honored with the attendance of his brother, who flew in from upstate New York.

Life on the Rocks
This slogan was on an advertisement by the Killing Salt Company published in the June 30, 1947 issue of Time magazine for the new wonder pesticide, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, otherwise known as DDT. During 1935, 150,000 American cases of malaria were caused by mosquitoes infected with the plasmodium parasite. A Swiss chemist won the Nobel Prize for the invention of DDT and after World War II, DDT was produced for agricultural use in the United States.

Many people in Horseshoe Bay are unaware of the existence of a community garden club in our midst. It is not exactly a secret. After all, this fall it will have been operating for 25 years and over that time many people have worked in the garden and enjoyed the harvests.
