Around the Bay

Haute Night at the Island, the Horseshoe Bay Associates of the Seton Development Board’s 19th Seton Gala broke a record this year with 566 tickets sold. The evening was a success in every facet of party-giving. This lawn party was a journey for the senses. The elegant country French home of Jayne and Jack Kendall served as the tranquil lake-side setting, backlit by a cloudless blue sky.

When we first moved to Horseshoe Bay, something surprised me. Whether in the car or walking, I noticed people made some sort of “gesture” that I didn’t recognize. It took me awhile, but finally I realized what they were doing. They were waving at me. Wow! I couldn’t remember when someone last waved at me.

Horseshoe Bay residents are noted for their service to many worthy causes. On a trip to scenic Arizona in 2002 sponsored by Elderhostel Vacations, vacations that combine educational travel with service, Horseshoe Bay’s Frankie Ramey found a need. The location was at the Hopi Indian reservation in northern Arizona, and the need was for senior adults interested in assisting the reservation’s elementary and middle school teachers in their education of Hopi children.

Help for those who live alone
Do you know people who live alone who have been stricken by a medical emergency, unable to reach anyone and not in contact with someone who might have checked on them on a regular, daily basis? Opinion

There has been much discussion lately in our school district about the implementation of a new curriculum called CSCOPE. Standards for seniors graduating are set by the Legislature and the Texas Education Agency.

Fine dining in an historic setting
Traveling south on Highway 281, you pass through the small town of Blanco about 40 miles from Horseshoe Bay. The town, which dates back to 1856, is experiencing some growth these days to the north and south, but the historic square is still the main center of interest. On the east side of Main Street stands the old Blanco County Courthouse, which was built in 1885-1886.
