The mood is “haute”. Elegant, but with the requisite Horseshoe Bay ingredient — relaxed. The Seton Gala planners want guests to feel welcome, well cared for and a bit pampered. So while the tuxedoed servers circulate with silver platters, guests may take in serene vistas of the lake, soothing melodies from a Grand piano, and effervescent aperitifs in champagne flutes.

The members of the International Club enjoyed an entertaining presentation and a scrumptious pot luck lunch on Sunday, March 14. Kay and David Rose and their former exchange student from Albania, Daniel Kristo, gave a presentation about Albania. David gave the history highlights of this small Balkan country. The members listened intently as he took them through the various forms of leadership: dictatorship, a long period of the Communist regimes, and Marxist-Leninism.
David turned the ...

Census forms are being delivered in person in many non-urban areas, including Horseshoe Bay. In recent weeks, Census workers have walked miles and miles of Texas, going door to door to deliver the 2010 Census forms. While most of the country’s population will receive their Census form in the mail, less densely populated areas like the Texas Hill Country – and about everywhere outside a major metropolitan area – will receive the Census form in person from a pleasant Census w ...

A friend of mine sent me a box full of quotes shortly after my fall (you know, the one where I toppled over backwards on my bathroom floor). I was reading them recently and one stuck with me: “People will not remember what you said or what you did, but they will remember how you made them feel.”
Wow.

I don’t remember the first calf fry I ever ate, but it was probably soon after I was able to digest solid food.
Nothing was ever wasted on our place when I was growing up. Chicken down was saved for pillows, manure was scooped up from the cattle pens and taken to the garden, leftover milk was fed to the hogs and zippers, buttons and hooks were removed from worn out clothes before they became rags for the tractor shed.
Everything had value, so it was no mystery to me that ...

Recent sunny days with bluebonnets popping out of the warming earth remind us that the time has come to plan some outdoor excursions, perhaps even an outdoor art class. The Wenmohs Ranch is a great place to get away for a few nights with family and/or friends. It is a 435 acre working cattle ranch that has been in the Wenmohs family for eight generations.

Dear Editor:
In the March 11 Beacon, the Mayor Lambert maintains “Your mayor and all members of the city council consider communication with the community very important”. I and I know many others certainly agree with the need for good communications, but must respectfully disagree with the methods the mayor and council rely on.

This quotation from the legendary Dorothy Parker says it all when it comes to figuring out what to do with leftover ham, a situation I was confronted with recently when I miscalculated and ended up with over half a spiral-cut ham after hosting the cast party for the Hill Country Theatre’s last production.
In my experience, it is inevitable that the amount of leftover ham and ham dishes I have stored in my refrigerator and freezer grows in inverse proportion to the amount of ham ...
