While a sluggish economy dominated the headlines of major news media during 2009, stories of faith, family, friends and community made the news closer to home during the year.
St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and the Church at Horseshoe Bay continue to serve as a nucleus of activity for area residents with their regular and special programs.

Everyone loves a crisp, fresh Christmas tree, but at some point, the holiday tree starts shedding pine needles and must yield to the new year. Horseshoe Bay residents have several options this year for removal of the holiday tree.

The Llano County Commissioners Court took care of several large and small business matters at their meeting Monday morning; two “good news” items were the approval of a larger-than-expected grant to make the county library more energy-efficient, and the successful completion of the Allen Keller Company’s contract to build a new boat ramp at the Llano County Park on Lake Buchanan.

Master Gardener Robert Yantis will be presenting a free program on “Living with Purple Martins” to learn about our beautiful springtime visitors at a program presented by the Kingsland Garden Club on Friday, January 8 at 1:15 at the Kingsland Library, 125 W. Polk St.
These beautiful birds will be coming back from Brazil during February or March to have their babies and fill our skies eating insects.

Here it comes…the afterglow of that wonderful month of revelry we call “The Holidays.” Too much eating and certainly too much drinking along with the cold weather have brought out the sweatpants and sweatshirts. “Ahhhhh,” the comfort of an elastic waistband cannot be beat. But wait, don’t look, Ethel, but is THAT what I look like from behind?

We can’t always escape the sad events in our lives — but we still need to carry on. Obviously, for a married person, a divorce or the death of a spouse is a traumatic event. But if either event happens to you, you’ll need to make some financial moves to keep your life on track.

Pierre Miller Dossman, Sr., 90, of Horseshoe Bay passed away peacefully in the early hours Sunday, December 27, 2009. He was born on April 27, 1919 in Ville Platte, Louisiana to Joseph & Hyasinth (Vidrine) Dossman.
Pierre enlisted in the military in 1942 and was a member of the Normandy Invasion Task Force in WWII where he received a Purple Heart.
