Around the Bay

After the input received at the Town Hall Meeting on Oct. 8 opposing a street upgrade in the Fairways neighborhood funded by property owner assessments, the Horseshoe Bay City Council took little time at Monday’s road workshop to officially abandon the Fairways upgrade proposal and move forward to look at other road upgrade possibilities. HSB Mayor Bob Lambert began the road workshop with a quick summary.

Horseshoe Bay Police filed illegal dumping charges on six persons thought to be involved in several violations over the past few weeks. While conducting a surveillance operations, HSB patrol officers spotted Douglas Conely, 42, and Ray Franco, 40, both of Marble Falls, dumping a pickup load of brush and leaves into a cul-de-sac in HSB South.

The Texas Constitution of 1876 has been amended 456 times, and Texas voters are faced with 11 more proposed amendments at the polls this fall. Early voting began Monday and ends October 30 for the November 3 general election. In November 2007, voters were faced with 16 proposed Constitutional amendments. At its meeting on Tuesday afternoon, the Horseshoe Bay City Council unanimously agreed to provide water for its neighbors while the City of Cottonwood Shores makes repairs to its water plant. Dr. Roger Wayson, a CWS resident who volunteers as its environmental coordinator, told the HSB council that CWS has the funding in hand for the water plant repairs and expects the work to take less than 30 days.

This year’s Helping Hands Bayside Bazaar will be held at Quail Point in Horseshoe Bay on Saturday, November 14th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Local and area artists will be showcasing their wares including handmade jewelry, paintings, wine gifts, floral designs, children’s books, baby items, hand dyed scarves and t-shirts and many unique items crafted by Guild members.

Each year the Blue Lake Men’s Golf Association invites the ladies to join in a fun tournament. Local Corvette enthusiasts from Horseshoe Bay and Highland Lakes recently participated in Caravan 2009. The five Corvettes, along with almost 4000 other Corvettes from across the United States, traveled to Bowling Green, KY to help celebrate the 15th anniversary of the National Corvette Museum. While in Bowling Green, the group visited the Corvette Museum and also toured the Corvette Assembly Plant.

Good Rainy Morning to All The week began with a Monday afternoon Streets Workshop. The primary purpose of the gathering was for the Mayor to announce that the “people of the Fairways” have spoken and no further discussion of the Street Upgrade Program for the Fairways subdivisions was necessary. All of the Council agreed that it was time to move on and that the streets maintenance would continue as is in the Fairways with no plan for an upgrade.

With a great weather weekend, all three Horseshoe Bay Resort golf courses came into play when Dave Widner and his three sons Kevin, Steve and Mike competed in their Tenth Annual Widner Family Golf Tournament.  The foursome played Apple Rock on Thursday, Ram Rock on Friday with Dad Dave one stroke ahead, but on the last day at Slick Rock Dave faded and lost by 7 strokes. Due to unprecedented demand over the past five months and very low supply available for purchase from the Capital Area Food Bank in Austin, food shelves at the Marble Falls Helping Center are at their lowest level in 10 years. The Church at Horseshoe Bay’s fourth annual WOW (Women of the Word) fall retreat is scheduled for November 3-4, 2009 at Camp Buckner near Kingsland, Texas. The group is thrilled to have as its guest speaker, one of their very own, Gail Matthews of Horseshoe Bay. The theme for the retreat is “How about a Faith Lift?”, which is both fun and inspiring.

Four people were arrested on a narcotics search warrant in Cottonwood Shores on Thursday, Oct. 15. Officers seized a quantity of methamphetamine, scales and packaging materials at 839 Westwood in Cottonwood Shores, and charged Anna Marie Armadillo, 33, Patty Lou Doss, 49, Laurence Scott Gonzalez, 27, and Leslie Vaughn Ortiz, 20, with 1st degree felonies for manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine over four grams but less than 200 grams. Apollo Astronaut Walt Cunningham presented Harvey Mudd College (HMC) senior Bryan Teague with a $10,000 scholarship from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) during a public presentation and ceremony Oct. 1. Bryan is the grandson of Horseshoe Bay resident Jim Teague. The Astronaut Scholarship is the largest monetary award based solely on merit that is given in the United States to science and engineering undergraduate students.

A small spring broke in a pressure value in the Cottonwood Shores water system on Tuesday afternoon, causing pressure problems throughout the system. Cottonwood Shores Mayor Bentley Martin said they knew there was a problem in the system by 1:30 p.m., and by 4:30 crews had identified the tiny spring as the culprit.

Kansas State leads the Big 12 North! Next you’ll read that the Nationals are in the World Series. The Wildcats tuned up for Texas A&M with a 66-14 loss to Texas Tech, October 10, but then demolished the Aggies, 62-14. It’s election season. Although you won’t be selecting either a new president or a new Congress, you may well have the opportunity to vote on something that can affect your city or state: municipal bonds. However, just because you vote to give your state or local government permission to issue municipal bonds doesn’t mean you have to invest in them.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, During early voting and on November 3 the voters of Horseshoe Bay have an opportunity to approve a ¼ % sales tax that will all be dedicated to improve streets and reduce Ad Valorem Property Tax. Two years ago a committee consisting of Jerry Dunn, Bob Lowry and myself recommended that voters approve a sales tax of 1 ½ % for Horseshoe Bay.
