On Friday, a Travis County jury took about 20 minutes to find Paul G. Devoe III guilty of capital murder of Haylie Faulkner, 15, and Danielle Hensley, 17, during a killing spree in 2007. Burnet County Deputy Francis David Blake died in a one vehicle accident while driving to a serious accident Saturday morning around 1 a.m. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety spokes person Tom Vinger, Deputy Blake was responding to an accident with injuries on Park Road 4, one to two miles south of Hwy 29, when he apparently struck a deer just west of Deer Springs, lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree. Although Texas Comptroller Susan Combs has returned $147 million in unclaimed property to its owners this fiscal year, the state’s unclaimed property fund still has $2 billion more waiting to return to the wallets of individuals, businesses and governmental entities. Horseshoe Bay properties accounted for 11 of the 19 foreclosure notices filed in Llano County during September. Fourteen of the September filings were scheduled for the October 6 sale date, and five were posted for the November 3 sale. The Texas Property Code requires that trustees post foreclosure notices at least 21 days before the date of sale (which is set as the first Tuesday of each month) and file the notice with the county clerk’s office. Horseshoe Bay’s Jared Edwards won the boys 12 division of the USTA Zone Advancement Tournament in San Angelo this past weekend. He is in the sixth grade at Faith Academy, is a member of Horseshoe Bay Resort and is coached by Michelle Stallard and Aland Price. His win qualifies him to compete in the champ division of the United State Tennis Association.

You never know when a good thing is coming your way, sometimes things just have a way of working out. Recently the Highland Lakes SPCA, a 501 ©3 non-profit, was approached by friends who were unaware the organization receives no funding from the national organization and relies solely on the contributions of the local community.

Performers, stage crews and volunteers – standouts from the 2008-09 season of the Hill Country Community Theater (HCCT) – were honored with “Academy Awards” Friday night. Results of audiences’ votes, taken during the entire season, were used to select the winners of the awards. Named the Phyl and Gigi Awards, the event is named in honor of the two co-founders of HCCT: Phyl Holbert and Gigi Fischer.

The City of Horseshoe Bay is blessed by the number of retirees and senior citizens living within its city limits. Not only does the area benefit from financial support given to local charities but many organizations benefit from the volunteering of those who have a little extra time. Rock and Roll is here to stay! Llano High School Marching Band competed Saturday, October 3rd at the Hill Country Marching Festival in Fredericksburg. Under the direction of Senior Drum Major Will Cohen and Junior Drum Major Margot Stevenson, they performed their 50’s half time show complete with songs like Rock Around the Clock, Blue Suede Shoes and ending with a grand finale of Greased Lighting.

Pedernales Electric’s Financial Strategies, Contracts and Budget Committee met in Johnson City on Sept. 30 and recommended that the full Board of Directors consider a resolution to address the issue of excessive uncollected debt being experienced by the Cooperative. Dr. Wilda Furr Meixner of Oak Ridge was honored recently by the Board of Regents of Texas State University as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus, one of only four so honored in 2009. James Michael “MIKE” Jeffers, 53 years died at his home in Buchanan Dam following a long 2 year battle with cancer on October 4, 2009. Mike was born on September 26, 1956 son of James and Frances Powell Jeffers in Austin, Texas. He served in the U.S. Marines prior to working as a self employed carpenter.

Karen Janice Jackson died on September 20, 2009 at the Northwood Healthcare Center in Marble Falls, Texas at the age of 62 years. A native of Corpus Christi, Texas, she was a daughter of Maurice and Inez Kennedy Bergen. Karen has resided in Marble Falls and San Antonio, Texas for many years.
