Dear Editor,

Over the last few weeks I have had the opportunity and joy of watching a department and community come together to support a member of our organization in need. As you are all aware, Capt. Richard Baum’s daughter, Kristi Smith, is awaiting a liver transplant and the family is overwhelmed with financial needs as this develops. Saturday we held a benefit gathering at Quail Point Lodge to raise funds to help this family through the tough times that are ahead. I observed all of my officers and staff, as well as their family members, coming forward with contributions or labor to help put this on and I watched as a community did the same. There were over 115 items donated to a silent auction which raised in excess of $10,000. There were several hundred citizens, City Council members, POA Board members, and outside law enforcement officers who attended the BBQ and donated an additional $11,000 to the project.

The reason for this letter is to simply say ‘thank you’ to all of those who attended, worked, gave contributions, donated auction items, provided entertainment, provided food, donated the facilities, and otherwise have provided moral support to this family in need. Obviously there is not enough room to even start to thank all of you individually so I will ask your forgiveness in lumping you all together as just a wonderful bunch of folks with big hearts and compassion for their friends in need.

May the good Lord bless each of you, for we feel he has blessed us with your friendship, kindness, and support...

Bill Lane
